Step into the extraordinary world of Modernisme (Catalan Art Nouveau) on a captivating journey through Barcelona’s architectural gems

Our tour begins at the serene and stunning Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Far from the typical clinical setting, architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner conceived this former hospital complex as a “city within a garden,” featuring vibrant ceramic tiles, intricate mosaics, and beautiful pavilions bathed in light. It is a profoundly peaceful and overlooked jewel, offering a quiet contrast to the grandeur that awaits.

Next, we venture to the crowning achievement of Catalan architecture: Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família. Still under construction after more than a century, this colossal basilica is an ever-evolving symphony of stone. We will explore the contrasting Nativity and Passion façades, each a visual bible, and step inside to witness the breathtaking forest of soaring columns and stained glass that floods the nave with kaleidoscopic color.

From the divine heights of the Sagrada Família, we journey to the elegant Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona’s most fashionable boulevard. Here, Modernisme reaches its pinnacle in residential architecture. Our final stop is the iconic Casa Milà, universally known as La Pedrera (The Stone Quarry). Gaudí’s radical, undulating stone façade and its surreal, warrior-guarded rooftop terrace stand as a testament to his boundless, organic genius, marking the perfect conclusion to our immersion in Barcelona’s unique artistic heritage.

Do you have a question?

How does this tour of the Barcelona’s Modernisme masterpieces work?

Our full-day immersion into Barcelona’s unique architectural movement, Modernisme, begins at the peaceful grounds of the Sant Pau Recinte Modernista. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, this former hospital complex stands as the magnum opus of architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a contemporary of Gaudí. Domènech envisioned a humane, functional space for healing, dramatically rejecting the dark, cramped hospitals of the era. The result is a series of interconnected pavilions set within lush gardens, deliberately designed to allow patients to recover in a beautiful, light-filled environment—a truly radical concept for its time.

From the serene sanctuary of Sant Pau, our tour transports us to the spiritual heart of Modernisme: the Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família. Antoni Gaudí’s unparalleled, still-unfinished basilica is arguably the most ambitious and complex religious structure ever conceived. Since 1882, the Sagrada Família has been under construction, an ever-evolving symbol of faith and architectural ambition.

The final part of the tour brings us (by taxi)  to the elegant Passeig de Gràcia where we’ll stop for lunch before we encounter the culmination of Gaudí’s civic residential work: Casa Milà, universally nicknamed La Pedrera (The Stone Quarry). Completed in 1912, the building was highly controversial in its day for its radical, organic forms. This final stop offers a fitting moment to reflect on the legacy of Modernisme—an artistic movement that transformed a city and left an indelible mark on world architecture.

Anna was great! She was informative without being boring, catered to our specific sight-seeing requests, and kept us fully enlightened and entertained. How this woman has so much knowledge, I don’t know! She literally had the answer to every single question we had. We stopped for a coffee mid-way as she could sense we were getting tired from walking and I enjoyed chatting to her socially. I 100% recommend her for anyone going to Barcelona!

We engaged Anna for a 3 days private tour in Barcelona. She is very dedicated and knowledgeable on every places of interest in Barcelona. When my child wasn’t feeling too well during the trip, she was flexible and accommodative to our last minute changes and requests. My family truly enjoyed our trip in Barcelona and had a wonderful time spent with Anna. If you are looking for customized private tour, Anna will be the best person to engage!!

We concur with all the previous wonderful reviews of Anna and her team. We ended up having three tours with Anna and each one was different, informative and superb. If you would prefer to soak in the city and keep your nose out of the guide books and maps contact Barcelonina. Our trip to Spain had been derailed but once we contacted Jordi, everything started to improve. These folks have it together, make great suggestions on what to do and are patient with letting you make up your mind. Barcelona would not have been nearly as fascinating without them.
