Barcelona Gothic Quarter Tour
The Gothic Quarter in Barcelona: a leap to the Middle Ages in expert hands of a private local guide. A tour full of history, anecdotes and places with charm.
Did you know that Barcelona is a city with two thousand years of history? That we still trample on the same streets traced by the Romans? We offer you a journey through the history of Barcelona while listening old stones. Because sometimes, those stones speak up.
The Gothic Quarter in Barcelona has a special atmosphere thanks to its narrow, labyrinthine streets, historic buildings and quiet squares that offer us charming places to get wonderfully lost. You will immerse yourself in history while admiring the remains of Roman Barcelona, while deciphering the facade of the Cathedral and walking through the old Jewish quarter. Place Saint-Jacques, the political centre of Barcelona, is the last highlight of this first part of the tour.
Once the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona explored, you will discover the Ribera district (or Born) with its medieval centre located on Montcada Street. Following this path, you will reach Santa Maria del Mar.
How the Gothic Quarter visit takes place?
Firstly, you will meet the guide at your accommodation in order to go together to the old Barcelona. If your accommodation is near downtown, you will just walk there, otherwise, a short subway ride will take you there. This is where the visit begins.
The old Roman walls will welcome you to the oldest part of Barcelona. In fact, the Gothic Quarter actually has medieval elements and Roman elements. In this context, along with the help of your expert private guide, you will trace the footprints of both eras.
The neo-Gothic facade of the Cathedral, its Romanesque chapel and Gothic apse will reveal the importance of religious power in the Middle Ages. Then, a walk through the stone streets will take you to King’s Square, where the civil power was located. Anecdotes about queens, sculptors and the very Christopher Columbus, are part of the stories to understand that period of time.
What else are we going to discover in Old Barcelona?
Further on, you will explore the liveliest parts of medieval Barcelona: the old Jewish Quarter and the Ribera District. As early as the nine hundred years, there were Jews in Barcelona, but it was only two hundred years later when they had the right to have their neighbourhood.
It was not a ghetto because there were Christians living or trading in the same place. Until when did the good friendliness last? Take the tour and discover it!
Finally, the last part of the visit of the Gothic Barcelona is a walk through the Ribera Quarter, also known as “Born”. The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar and Montcada Street Palaces, which today house the Picasso Museum and, are the icing cake for this route.

Anna was great. We toured with 2 adults and a 13 year old. She answered every question, gave a great overview and knew everything about the cathedral. Her english is excellent and she made learning fun. I would highly recommend to everyone for her vast knowledge of Barcelona and the cathedral.
